At Pickering Smile Centre, we understand that dental anxiety or fear can prevent many people from getting the care they need. Whether you feel mildly nervous or have a severe phobia, we have many sedation options that can help ease your mind and help you to relax and even enjoy your dental visits. Don’t let dental anxiety stop you from receiving necessary treatment.
Our team at Pickering Smile Centre is very familiar with many different types of sedation. We offer multiple levels of sedation, including nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") for a mild relaxing sensation and IV conscious sedation for those who need a deeper level of comfort.
Being prepared prior to your sedation appointment will ensure that everything runs smoothly and you will have the best possible experience.
You will have a detailed, thorough consultation with your dentist to review your health history and discuss sedation options that may be best for you.
Often, patients are required to fast for several hours or overnight before their sedation procedure. The length of fasting time needed depends on the type of sedation.
Any drugs needed will be administered by trained professionals, (Dentist, Doctor, or Registed Nurse, ensuring your safety and comfort. You will feel calm, relaxed, and at ease throughout your treatment. For some oral and IV sedation appointments, you may have little or no memory of the procedure, and even up to 24 hours after the procedure.
You will be monitored for safety. Post-procedure instructions will be provided to ensure clarity and a smooth recovery. For oral sedation or IV sedation appointments, you’ll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours.
The short answer to this question is no. However, many patients do fall asleep, and most remember very little if anything about the appointment once they recover. If you want to be completely asleep, the only option is General Anaesthesia, which is generally done in a hospital setting.
Yes! The types of sedation used in dentistry are safe and effective. Trained professionals (Dentists, Doctors, and RN’s) are there to ensure that your dental procedure goes smoothly.
No! Local anesthesia (dental freezing) is still used alongside sedation to ensure a completely pain-free experience. You most likely will not even notice the freezing.
Any type of sedation is generally avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy, but sometimes may be permitted with medical clearance from your doctor in the later part of the pregnancy.
While side effects from dental sedation are rare, it is possible to experience allergic reactions, dizziness, or nausea. Our experienced team will guide you through the process and will thoroughly evaluate your medical history to ensure the safest experience possible.
Our entire Smile Centre team is highly trained in administering and monitoring safe and effective sedation.
