Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to emerge, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. However, many people do not have enough space for them to grow in properly, leading to complications such as impaction, crowding, infection, and pain.
Research shows that up to 85% of people will require wisdom tooth extraction at some point in their lives.
To ensure a safe and smooth procedure, we provide pre-operative instructions, which may include:
Take prescribed pain medication and use ice packs to reduce swelling.
Bite on gauze pads to stop bleeding and avoid spitting or drinking through straws.
Rinse with warm salt water after 24 hours and avoid brushing near the extraction site.
Stick to soups, yogurt, smoothies, and mashed foods for the first few days.
Rest for 24-48 hours and avoid strenuous exercise to prevent bleeding.
Contact your dentist if you experience severe pain, swelling, prolonged bleeding, or infection signs

At Pickering Smile Centre, we understand that wisdom tooth removal can come with many questions. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you understand what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.
Wisdom tooth removal typically involves local anesthesia to numb the area and prevent pain. However, you can choose:
💡 Talk to your dentist to determine the best option for your comfort level.
❌ No mouthwash for at least 24 hours after extraction to avoid disturbing the blood clot and irritating the surgical site.
✅ After 24 hours, use a gentle saltwater rinse (mix 1 teaspoon of salt in warm water) to keep the area clean.
Stitches may be used if the extraction site needs extra support for healing.
Not all wisdom tooth extractions require stitches—your dentist will decide based on your case.
Dissolvable stitches will disappear on their own in 7-10 days.
Antibiotics are not always necessary, but may be prescribed if:
Your dentist will evaluate your needs and prescribe antibiotics if required.

Pain is most intense during the first 2-3 days.
Mild discomfort may last up to 1-2 weeks, but gradually improves.
Pain relief: Ice packs, over-the-counter painkillers, and proper aftercare.
Minor bleeding is normal for a few hours after extraction.
Bite on gauze for 30-45 minutes to help form a clot. Avoid spitting, using straws, or vigorous rinsing to prevent prolonged bleeding.
If bleeding persists beyond 24 hours, contact your dentist.
Swelling peaks within 48 hours and starts to subside after 3-4 days.
Use ice packs (20 min on, 20 min off) during the first 24-48 hours. Keep your head elevated while sleeping to reduce swelling.
