What Is Dental Surgery?

dental surgery

Dental surgery refers to dental procedures that involve bone and soft tissue as well as teeth. Many different types of services can be categorized as dental surgery. At the Smile Centre, we offer many different surgical procedures, as well as several sedation options if needed. We do wisdom teeth extractions, grafting (bone and gum), and dental implant procedures. We also offer some adjunctive services, such as PRF, socket preservation, and many sedation options.

Dental surgery can be used to treat tooth disease, gum recession, replace missing teeth (dental implants), and also for many cosmetic procedures. Whether you are looking for teeth extractions or replacement, grafting, or other surgical procedures, we are here to help. All of our doctors at the Smile Centre are highly skilled and have been trained in all aspects of dental surgery. We also offer Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas), and both Oral and IV sedation. Whether you are nervous about your surgical procedure, or simply want to be relaxed and less aware while you are in the chair, we can help you to decide what will be suitable for your needs.

What are some common dental surgery procedures?

Dental surgery is a blanket term that can be used to describe tooth extractions, grafting (both gum and bone), and dental implant placement. This term generally refers to procedures that involve bone and soft tissue as well as teeth.

Why would a tooth require surgical extraction?

While most tooth extractions are fairly simple and routine, others may require a surgical approach. Teeth can require extraction for many reasons, including impaction (tooth is stuck under bone or gum and is prevented from fully erupting), severe infection or tooth decay (cavities), or if it is broken below the gumline.

Why would I need to extract my Wisdom Teeth?

Your third permanent molars, often referred to as wisdom teeth, can be problematic for a number of reasons. If they are impacted in the bone or gum tissue, they may be susceptible to decay or infection as they are virtually impossible to keep clean on your own.

Completely impacted teeth that are still in bone are often recommended for extraction to prevent future problems. They can become painful, infected, or develop cysts around them if left untreated.

Partially impacted teeth often become inflamed or infected and can cause pain or discomfort. This type of pain can sometimes be treated with antibiotics in the short term, but over time, the only way to eliminate the problem permanently is to extract the tooth.

Wisdom teeth can also develop large cavities or infection easily due to their position causing difficulty with cleaning without specialized dental instruments. Your dentist will often recommend extraction instead of attempting restoration with fillings and crowns; this is due to the large incidence of recurrent decay in these difficult to access areas.

Another reason to consider removing your wisdom teeth is lack of space. When there is crowding, the third molars may push against the neighboring teeth. This can cause damage to the adjacent teeth.

Because your wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt into the dentition, they often cause crowding problems, infection, or become impacted. All of these issues can cause pain or damage to the neighbouring teeth and bone. The easiest way to avoid these issues is to remove them.

Why would my dentist recommend a dental implant?

Over the last decade, there have been so many advances in the field of dentistry. Dental implants are a great example of technology in dentistry. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is surgically placed to replace a missing tooth. A crown is attached to the implant to complete the procedure. Whether you are missing a tooth or multiple teeth due to infection, decay, or accident, dental implants can provide an excellent solution.

While there are other ways to replace missing teeth, including partial/complete dentures or dental bridges, dental implants are the gold standard. There are a few reasons that your dentist may recommend an implant to replace your missing tooth. Implants feel more like natural teeth than any other tooth replacement method. They look and feel natural, and give back biting/chewing ability similar to natural teeth. They are extremely durable and can last a lifetime. Another benefit of dental implants is that, unlike with a traditional bridge, they require no treatment or drilling of the adjacent teeth. Dental implants can even aid in preventing bone loss in the areas of the missing teeth.
