What Are Dental Implants Used For?

If you have ever been missing a tooth, or are worried you are about to lose a tooth, dental implants may be the ideal solution for you. Whether you are missing one or multiple teeth, dental implants are an effective way to restore your smile and give you back your confidence. Missing teeth can have a negative impact on both your smile’s appearance and function. Due to advances in modern dentistry, traditional dentures are no longer the first treatment suggested for replacing missing teeth. Dental implants provide a safe, strong, long-lasting, and aesthetic solution for replacing missing teeth without the use of removable prosthetics.

What is a Dental Implant Made of?

A dental implant is basically an artificial tooth root. The implant itself is a titanium post that to most people, resembles a screw. A ceramic, porcelain or zirconia crown is then attached to the post once the implant has healed and integrated into the bone.

How does a Dental Implant Work?

A dental implant is a simple way to replace single or multiple teeth without the need to treat or damage the surrounding dentition. The implant, once placed, heals with the jaw bone integrating into the small threads in the titanium. Once fully healed, the implant is secure and permanent.

How long does a dental implant procedure take?

The overall implant procedure is generally done in two stages. The first stage is the surgical portion. The implant is placed into the jawbone. The second stage involves placing a crown (an artificial tooth) on top. In some cases, a temporary crown can be placed on the same day as the implant surgery, but this is determined on a case by case basis. Most often, immediate temporary restoration is limited to anterior teeth in the aesthetic zone.

Why Get Dental Implants at Pickering Smile Centre?

Is the Implant Procedure Painful?

Most people are surprised to learn that dental implant placement is a very routine and comfortable procedure. While we do offer several options for sedation, most people are perfectly relaxed during the appointment using only local anesthesia (dental freezing)

What is the Recovery Time After Implant Surgery?

Recovery time depends on a variety of factors, including the number of implants placed, whether or not extractions are done at the same appointment, and individual reactions to the surgery. With basic implant placement, most people are able to return to their normal daily routine right away with the use of minor painkillers or anti-inflammatory medications. With larger, more complex procedures, such as All on 4 (where the full arch of teeth is replaced all at once), the recovery process can be a little longer. We usually tell patients 2-3 weeks of recovery time may be needed, but most are able to resume their usual activities after only a few days. Some patients experience bruising or swelling for up to one week after surgery.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

Dental implants are an excellent way to restore function and appearance where there are missing teeth. Thanks to advancements in digital dental technology, dental implants can be an affordable, comfortable and permanent alternative to traditional porcelain bridges or partial or complete dentures. Because they are a fixed restoration, there is no need for sticky adhesives or glues.

What are some advantages of Dental Implants over other options?

No need to touch uninvolved teeth

When placing a traditional bridge, we often have to do some preparation to the teeth neighbouring the space. This can involve drilling into otherwise healthy teeth, which can weaken their structure over time. Dental implants are independent of other teeth and therefor do not require any treatment on the adjacent teeth.

Decreased bone loss and bone loss prevention

Because dental implants are fixed right into the jawbone, they can actually help to reduce bone loss. Bone loss occurs after tooth loss when there is no stimulation to the bone from biting and chewing forces. With traditional bridges and dentures, you do not get this type of stimulation and over time, the bone deteriorates. Dental Implants help to keep your jawbone healthy.

Comfort & Fit

Traditional dentures can be uncomfortable and ill-fitting. The fit can even change over time based on factors such as weight fluctuations and bone loss. Dental implants offer the closest feeling to your natural teeth. You won’t be able to feel them at all.

Aesthetics and Function

Dental implants offer much better functionality than other tooth replacement options. They can withstand similar forces to your natural teeth, while dentures only offer a small percentage of the chewing capability. They are also virtually undetectable - They will look and feel like your natural teeth.

Variety of Options

Implants replace your teeth and are fixed in place, so again beyond normal oral hygiene you do not need to take care of them.
